2022 NMAA Soccer Championships Round 1 News and Scores

BOYS 5A #5 Albuquerque High vs #12 Cleveland Final score Storm 1 Bulldogs 0

The Storm came out to play yesterday as they picked up the upset win over the Bulldogs. The game was highly competitive throughout. While Albuquerque High seemed off they still put up a fight. Cleveland senior and captain, #3 Jack Marshall, scored the only goal of the match. He was assisted by fellow senior #2 Christian Dapolito. Cleveland put up 13 shots total in the game. One being a beauty that banged off the right goal post by Brayan Ramirez. Storm goalkeeper, Joaquin Armijo, was stout with a 100% save rate with 8 total saves. Cleveland moves on to face #4 Hobbs in Hobbs this Saturday.

Girls 5A #5 Cibola vs #12 Hobbs Final score Cougars 3 Eagles 2

Cibola hosted Hobbs in a match that was well played by both schools. Cibola was able to hold off the Eagles in the second half as they could not find an equalizer although they desperately tried. In the second half, Cibola received a red card giving Hobbs a one player advantage for quite a bit of time. The Cougar defense stepped up huge during this period. Hobbs eventually received a red card in the second half as well and Cibola controlled the game until the final whistle. Senior midfielder, #19 Ava Carpentier, scored the go ahead goal for Cibola. The Cougars face district rival #4 Volcano Vista in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Girls 5A #6 Sandia vs #11 Organ Mountain Final score Matadors 3 Knights 0

Sandia hosted Organ Mountain at the APS Soccer Complex yesterday. The Matadors controlled the game from the outset. Organ Mountain senior striker, #9 Marisa Harrington, had a few opportunities and some nice shots on goal but Sandia was able to limit her effectiveness. Matador forward, #5 Ayla Dils, started the scoring off for Sandia. Senior, #10 Jordan Candelaria, added the second goal of the game with a rocket from outside the box. The last goal for Sandia was scored by Ayla on a breakaway that she was able to push past the goalkeeper. The Matadors now face the Eagles on Friday at Eldorado High School.
